WAJESHA Launches Official Website to Strengthen Environment, Science and Health Journalism Across West Africa
The West African Journalists for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (WAJESHA) has officially launched its website (https://www.wajesha.org) marking a significant step toward strengthening specialised journalism and expanding professional collaboration among media practitioners across West Africa.
The newly launched platform is designed to serve as a digital hub where journalists, editors, researchers, scientists and communicators can exchange knowledge, access valuable resources, publish reports and collaborate on critical issues affecting the region.
According to the organisation, the website will promote high-quality reporting on climate change, environmental protection, public health, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, food systems and scientific innovation—issues considered vital to sustainable development across West Africa.
WAJESHA, a non-profit journalism initiative of the Centre for Climate Change & Food Security (CCCFS) headquartered in Ghana, currently boasts nearly 200 members drawn from across the West African sub-region. The network brings together journalists, media professionals, researchers and science communicators committed to improving evidence-based reporting on development issues.
Speaking during the launch, WAJESHA Director, Mahmud Mohammed-Nurudeen, described the website as a strategic response to growing regional challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, environmental degradation and emerging public health threats.
He explained that the increasing complexity of these issues requires journalism that goes beyond breaking news by providing context, explaining underlying causes and highlighting practical solutions.
"Our focus is to build a network where journalists can access information, engage experts and produce stories that help communities understand issues affecting their lives," he said.
The Director added that the platform will provide members with opportunities for professional development, knowledge sharing and cross-border collaboration aimed at improving specialised journalism throughout the region.
Also speaking, WAJESHA Editor-in-Chief, Aminu Adamu Ahmed, stressed the importance of accuracy and technical understanding when reporting on scientific, environmental and health-related subjects.
He noted that quality journalism in these fields requires access to credible information, expert networks and reliable evidence to ensure the public receives accurate and meaningful reports.
Ahmed reaffirmed WAJESHA's commitment to supporting journalists in producing investigative and evidence-based stories that promote accountability and contribute to informed public discourse.
The organisation disclosed that the website will also showcase investigations, feature stories and research-driven reports produced by its members while serving as a networking platform for professionals across West Africa.
As part of its expansion strategy, WAJESHA has invited journalists, editors, researchers, science communicators and other media professionals who share its vision to register and become members of the growing regional network.
The organisation described the website launch as a major milestone in its mission to strengthen specialised journalism and improve reporting on issues that will shape the future of West Africa.
Interested professionals can register for membership through WAJESHA's official website.
