Questions Raised Over Peter Obi's Academic Records Spark Fresh Debate
Fresh controversy has emerged over the academic credentials of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following claims circulating on social media questioning the authenticity and consistency of documents said to be his university and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates.
The allegations surfaced after a debate over Obi's university degree classification. While some critics had claimed he graduated with a Third Class degree, supporters reportedly released a document presented as his degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, indicating he obtained a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree in Philosophy.
However, rather than ending the controversy, critics argue that the released documents have raised additional questions they believe require clarification from Obi or the relevant institutions.
Questions Raised
Among the issues highlighted by the critics are:
Graduation and NYSC Timeline: They argue that if Obi graduated in June 1984, as indicated on the certificate circulating online, questions arise as to why his NYSC call-up reportedly commenced in May 1985. They contend that during the 1980s, NYSC mobilisation was generally conducted once annually, making the timeline worthy of explanation.
Name Discrepancies: Critics also point to differences between the name appearing on the university certificate and that on the alleged NYSC discharge certificate. They claim that while the university document bears the name "Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi," the NYSC certificate reportedly reads "Obi, Gregory Peter-Onwubuase," arguing that such variations should be clarified.
Certificate Serial Number: Another issue raised concerns the serial number on the university certificate, which reportedly reads "0000198." Critics argue that considering the university's history and the number of graduates produced before 1984, the numbering appears unusual and warrants clarification from the university.
Certificate Format: The critics further question the material and printing style of the certificate circulating online, describing it as different from certificates they have previously seen. They also question whether the degree classification being embedded in the printed template aligns with the university's certificate format at the time.
Signatories: Questions have also been raised about the signatures on the document. The critics note that the Vice Chancellor of the university in 1984 was Professor Frank Ndili, while the Registrar was Mr. U. O. Umeh, and suggest the signatures on the certificate should be verified.
1986 GCE Examination: They additionally question why Obi reportedly sat for a General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level examination in 1986, two years after his claimed university graduation, arguing that this also deserves clarification.
No Official Verification
As of the time of filing this report, neither Peter Obi nor the University of Nigeria has publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in the circulating claims. Similarly, the authenticity of the documents being referenced has not been independently verified.
The allegations remain claims by critics and should not be taken as established facts unless confirmed by the relevant authorities or supported by verifiable evidence. Any official response from Obi, the university, or the National Youth Service Corps may provide further clarity on the issues raised.
