2027: Atiku Unifies ADC, Amaechi Withdraws Suit as Coalition Gears Up to Challenge Tinubu
18th July, 2026 | Abuja
ABUJA— Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has recorded a major boost to his 2027 presidential ambition following the resolution of the internal crisis in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, after a former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, withdrew a court case challenging Atiku’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday struck out the pre-election suit filed by Amaechi after his legal counsel, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, applied for its withdrawal. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik subsequently dismissed the case.
Amaechi had instituted the suit to challenge the outcome of the ADC presidential primary that produced Atiku as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
ADC Closes Ranks
The withdrawal is being widely viewed within the opposition as a turning point for the ADC, which has in recent months worked to position itself as the platform for a broad anti-APC coalition.
Party sources said the development has ended a major source of distraction and will now allow the ADC to focus fully on nationwide mobilisation, coalition-building and presenting a united front ahead of 2027.
With the suit out of the way, all major ADC chieftains are said to have closed ranks behind Atiku with “one goal: to WIN,” according to a statement from the Atiku campaign.
“Strongest Pairing Since 1999”
Political observers say the emerging Atiku-Amaechi combination is already being described as the strongest presidential pairing to emerge in Nigeria since 1999, citing their combined experience, national spread and political structure.
“The Atiku-Amaechi ticket brings together decades of executive experience, grassroots reach and a coalition network that cuts across the North, South and Niger Delta,” a senior ADC chieftain told Matters Arising. “It is the kind of pairing that can pose a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.”
The ADC leadership is expected to intensify consultations with other opposition parties, civil society groups and stakeholders in the coming weeks as part of efforts to consolidate the coalition.
What It Means for 2027
For many within the opposition, the resolution signals that the ADC is gradually positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested presidential elections.
The development also puts more pressure on the ruling APC as it prepares to defend President Tinubu’s record in office.
Neither the Presidency nor the APC had responded to the development at press time.
MATTERS ARISING NEWS DESK will continue to monitor developments within the ADC and other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
