Tension at Federal High Court as Sowore Supporters Block Gates After DSS Interception

Abuja, Nigeria – June 2026

There was tension at the Federal High Court in Abuja after supporters of African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore blocked all entry and exit gates to resist operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, who intercepted Sowore following a court remand order.

The incident occurred shortly after a judge ordered Sowore’s remand at Kuje Custodial Centre and revoked his bail last week. Sowore is facing cybercrime charges filed by the DSS over a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.”

DSS intercepts Sowore after court ruling

According to eyewitness accounts, prison officials were waiting to take Sowore into custody after the court ruling. Minutes later, DSS operatives, reported to be about 30 in number and armed, took custody of Sowore instead of the prison officials.

The action prompted immediate reaction from Sowore’s supporters, who identified themselves as “comrades” and blocked all gates to the Federal High Court complex. The protesters said “nobody goes in or out” until Sowore was handed over to prison authorities.

Standoff ends with prison officials taking custody

After a period of resistance, the DSS operatives handed Sowore back to the custodial officials. Supporters then escorted the prison van to ensure he was taken to Kuje Custodial Centre without further interference.

An eyewitness, Oshioks Philip, said: “After the judge ruled remanding Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison, we were waiting for the prison officials to come take him. After few minutes the DSS with guns and about 30 of them kidnapped Sowore. Comrades immediately blocked all entry and exit gates to the Federal High Court. The resistance was mad, nobody goes in or out. The people resisted and the useless DSS had to bow. They have handed back the prison officials and we just escorted to be sure the DSS doesn't play fast one. Sowore is in Kuje now.”

Court had dismissed recusal application

Earlier in the day, the Federal High Court dismissed Sowore’s application asking the trial judge to recuse himself over allegations of bias. The court subsequently revoked his bail and ordered his remand pending trial.

Background

Sowore, a former AAC presidential candidate, has been standing trial on charges brought by the DSS. The case relates to statements he made on social media about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As of the time of this report, Sowore had been delivered to Kuje Custodial Centre. The DSS has not issued an official statement on the incident at press time.

Note: The description of DSS actions as “kidnapping” reflects the account of Sowore’s supporters. The DSS maintains it acts within the law when executing court orders and investigations.
