Supporters Rally Behind El-Rufai Amid Ongoing Detention, Demand Due Process
Abuja, June 23, 2026 — A prominent supporter of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on Nigerians to stand firmly behind the detained politician, describing his continued incarceration as unjust and politically motivated.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, political activist Shafiu Balarabe expressed concern over what he termed the persecution of El-Rufai, arguing that the former governor's detention was not based on any proven criminal wrongdoing but on his influence and popularity among Nigerian youths.
According to Balarabe, the continued detention of El-Rufai despite court proceedings and legal applications has raised questions about respect for the rule of law and due process in the country. He lamented that court orders and bail considerations were allegedly being disregarded, insisting that such actions undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
The supporter praised El-Rufai's record in public service, highlighting his tenure as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and later as Governor of Kaduna State. He credited the former governor with implementing reforms, improving infrastructure, and confronting security challenges during his years in office.
Balarabe also recalled El-Rufai's role during the controversial naira redesign policy introduced under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He argued that El-Rufai distinguished himself by openly challenging the policy when it caused hardship for many Nigerians and disrupted economic activities across the country.
"At a time when many citizens struggled to access cash and businesses suffered severe losses, El-Rufai chose to speak out and pursue legal action in defence of ordinary Nigerians," the statement said.
The activist accused Nigerians of failing to appreciate what he described as El-Rufai's sacrifices and contributions to national development. He maintained that supporters of the former governor remain committed to advocating for his release and protecting his legacy.
Balarabe further argued that attempts to silence or politically weaken El-Rufai have instead strengthened support for him, particularly among young people. He claimed that growing numbers of supporters across various states have continued to mobilise and campaign for justice and adherence to constitutional rights.
The statement also criticised the actions of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), alleging violations of El-Rufai's fundamental rights. Balarabe claimed that international attention was beginning to focus on the matter following calls by pro-El-Rufai groups for foreign organisations and human rights bodies to intervene.
Despite the challenges, the supporter expressed confidence that El-Rufai would eventually regain his freedom and continue contributing to national development.
He urged supporters, popularly known as "Elrufaists," to remain steadfast and peaceful in their advocacy, describing the situation as a test of loyalty and resilience.
"Darkness will end, light will return, and we will see it together," Balarabe stated, expressing optimism that justice would ultimately prevail.
The statement reflects growing concern among El-Rufai's supporters as legal proceedings surrounding his case continue. Authorities have yet to publicly respond to the latest allegations contained in the statement.
