Sultan Urges FG to Equip Immigration Service with Modern Technology to Strengthen National Security
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, CFR, mni, has called on the Federal Government to provide the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) with modern, state-of-the-art equipment to enhance national security and improve the agency's operational effectiveness.
The Sultan made the appeal on Thursday while receiving participants of the 13th Staff Course of the Nigeria Immigration Command and Staff College, Sokoto, during a courtesy visit to his palace.
He commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for its dedication to safeguarding Nigeria's borders and responding to evolving security threats across the country. According to him, the provision of modern equipment, alongside continuous training and capacity building, is crucial to improving professionalism and ensuring effective service delivery.
The revered monarch also condemned the activities of bandits and other criminal elements, stressing that Islam does not support violence or the unlawful killing of innocent people.
He further expressed concern over the growing misuse of social media platforms to spread hatred, misinformation, and ethnic profiling. The Sultan urged Nigerians to refrain from linking criminal activities to any particular ethnic or religious group.
According to him, criminality has no ethnic or religious identity, insisting that those who commit crimes should simply be regarded as criminals, irrespective of their background.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Nigeria Immigration Command and Staff College, Sokoto, Assistant Comptroller-General Ahmed Dauda Bagari, said the visit was aimed at seeking the Sultan's blessings and benefiting from his fatherly guidance and wealth of experience.
Bagari explained that the 13th Staff Course is designed to equip senior officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service with leadership, strategic thinking, and critical decision-making skills required to effectively tackle emerging security challenges and improve service delivery.
He disclosed that the course comprises 68 participants drawn from various formations of the Nigeria Immigration Service across the country.
The visit formed part of the activities lined up for the ongoing staff course, which seeks to strengthen the leadership capacity and operational readiness of senior immigration officers in addressing Nigeria's complex security and border management challenges.
