Sultan Declares Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as First Day of Islamic New Year

Sokoto, Nigeria – June 15, 2026 — The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as the first day of Muharram 1448AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The announcement was contained in a press release issued by the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Monday, June 15, 2026. According to the statement, the declaration follows the established Islamic lunar calendar procedures for determining the commencement of a new Hijrah year.

The statement, signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, confirmed that Muslims across Nigeria and beyond should observe Tuesday as the first day of the new Islamic year.

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and signifies the beginning of the Hijrah calendar, which commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah. The commencement of the new year is traditionally marked by prayers, reflection, and renewed commitment to faith and righteous conduct.

The Sultan extended his goodwill to the Muslim Ummah and urged faithful to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, security, and national development.

The declaration formally ushers in the year 1448AH for Muslims in Nigeria and other countries following the announced lunar calendar date.
