Reps Committee Adjourns Hearing on FCT Ancestral Land Dispute Involving Nigerian Navy to July 8

Abuja, Nigeria – The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has adjourned until July 8, 2026, the hearing into a petition against the Nigerian Navy over allegations of criminal trespass, intimidation, and the unlawful acquisition of ancestral lands in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The decision was announced by the committee's chairman, Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus La'ori, following proceedings involving the Public Complaints Commission (PCC), the Nigerian Navy, and representatives of affected indigenous communities.

The dispute centres on more than 7,400 hectares of land stretching from the Abuja Airport corridor to Giri and Zuba. The petition was brought on behalf of the indigenous communities of Tungamaje, Tungamdaki, and Idoseriki, who allege that the Nigerian Navy unlawfully occupied their ancestral lands.

Representing the communities, the PCC's Director of Investigation, Mrs. Adenike Adebisi, and the Commission's Assistant Director of Legal Services, Babagana Bukar, requested an adjournment to allow all affected communities to conclude the withdrawal of pending court cases related to the dispute.

Adebisi told the committee that the request was made in the interest of justice, explaining that the Commission required all related litigations to be withdrawn before it could fully investigate and resolve the complaint.

During the hearing, Committee Chairman La'ori questioned why the PCC was only responding at this stage of the investigation. In response, Adebisi explained that the Commission had only recently received a letter from the Nigerian Navy and was formally served with the document during the hearing.

"We were served today and need time to study the contents of the letter," she said.

Representing the Nigerian Navy, Commodore E. Bawa informed the committee that the document was a copy of records already before the committee.

La'ori also sought clarification on whether the petition before the committee involved the same subject matter and parties currently before the courts.

Responding, Babagana Bukar said the Commission would verify the details of the pending court cases and report its findings to the committee.

Following the submissions, the committee adjourned the matter until July 8, 2026, for further hearing.
