Profile of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi
Abuja, Nigeria— Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, has been named the reported running mate to African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ahead of the January 16, 2027 election.
Amaechi brings decades of experience across legislative, executive, and federal roles, with a political career rooted in Rivers State that expanded to national influence.
Federal and State Executive Experience
Amaechi served as Federal Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022 under the Buhari administration. During his tenure, he oversaw major rail projects including the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge rail lines, and pushed for reforms in Nigeria’s maritime and aviation sectors.
Before his ministerial role, he was Governor of Rivers State for two terms, 2007 to 2015. As governor, he focused on infrastructure development, education, and urban renewal in Port Harcourt. He also served as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, from 2011 to 2015, positioning him as a key voice among state executives on fiscal federalism and security issues.
Legislative and Early Political Career
Amaechi began his political career in the Rivers State House of Assembly, representing Ikwerre Constituency from 1999 to 2007. He served as Speaker of the House for the entire eight-year period, one of the longest-serving speakers in the state’s history.
Early in his career, he worked as Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor of Rivers State. During the military era, he was Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, Rivers State Chapter, a pro-democracy group that campaigned for the restoration of civilian rule after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
Presidential Ambition and Political Standing
In 2022, Amaechi contested the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential primary. He finished as runner-up with 316 delegate votes, behind eventual winner Bola Tinubu. The strong showing reinforced his national profile and South-South political base.
Education and National Honour
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies and Literature from the University of Port Harcourt. In recognition of his public service, he was conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON.
Role in ADC Ticket
Political analysts say Amaechi’s experience in transportation, governance, and party politics, combined with his South-South roots, is expected to complement Atiku’s North-East base on the ADC “AA” ticket. The coalition is positioning the pairing as a balance of regional representation and executive experience ahead of 2027.
