PDP Wins 18 of 21 LGAs in Adamawa Council Polls Amid Low Voter Turnout
Yola, Adamawa State— The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has won 18 out of 21 local government areas in Saturday’s Adamawa State local government elections, according to preliminary results released on 14th June 2026.
The election was however characterized by widespread voter apathy, late arrival of election officials, and allegations of irregularities from opposition parties.
Low turnout and logistical issues
Reports from across the state showed many polling units either failed to open at the scheduled time or recorded no voter presence. In Girei I Ward, election officials and voters were absent as of 11 a.m. In Song LGA, personnel were sighted in only a few polling units within the township, with no voter participation observed.
In Demsa LGA, African Democratic Congress, ADC, chairmanship candidate Dennis Kakaba alleged that voting occurred in only 8 of 172 polling units. “There is no local government election in Adamawa State. They wrote the results last week and are pretending that an election has taken place. It is a shame for democracy,” Kakaba claimed.
Several residents attributed the low turnout to the perception that LG elections are usually won by the ruling party. Poor coordination and late arrival of officials also contributed. Rainfall that started around 1 p.m. further disrupted movement and discouraged voters.
Government and opposition reactions
Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Leader Leneke, dismissed claims of manipulation. He credited the PDP’s performance to more intensive campaigning. “The PDP governorship candidate and the chairmanship candidates were going out every day for campaigns, but the ruling APC was not doing the same. So, if the PDP wins the election today, it is due to its hard work,” Leneke said.
He also acknowledged voter apathy, especially in rural areas where many believe LG elections “are meant for the ruling party in government,” and expressed hope the outcome would change that perception. Leneke added that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was absent due to an official assignment outside the state.
Governor Fintiri defected from the PDP to the APC in February, according to a previous report by News Week Nigeria.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, said it remains confident the final outcome will differ once the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission, ADSIEC, releases official results. APC Publicity Secretary Dogo Victor urged supporters to await the formal declaration.
Context
The outcome is expected to fuel debate in Adamawa over voter engagement, credibility of LG polls, and conduct of grassroots elections nationwide. Final results are expected from ADSIEC in the coming days.
Note: Preliminary results and claims in this report are attributed to ADSIEC, party officials, candidates, and field reports at the time of filing.
