Professor Hajara Ibrahim Makes History as Northern Nigeria's First Female Professor of Pharmacy
Professor Hajara Ibrahim has etched her name in Nigeria's academic history as the first female Professor of Pharmacy in Northern Nigeria, breaking barriers and inspiring generations of women pursuing careers in science, research, and higher education.
Born on 15 August 1962 in Zaria, Kaduna State, Professor Ibrahim built an outstanding academic career through dedication and excellence. She obtained her Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master's degree in Pharmacognosy, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmacognosy from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, completing her doctoral studies in 1998.
She joined the academic staff of ABU in 1987 and steadily rose through the ranks. In 2006, she was promoted to the rank of Professor, becoming the first female Professor of Pharmacy in Northern Nigeria—a landmark achievement that opened doors for more women in pharmaceutical sciences and academia across the region.
Currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development at Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Ibrahim has devoted decades to teaching, mentoring students, conducting research, and providing academic leadership.
Her research interests span medicinal plants, natural products, herbal medicine standardization, hypertension, drug interactions, and drug development, making significant contributions to pharmaceutical research and public health.
Over the course of her career, she has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, presented over 40 conference papers, and authored the book "Practical Use of Herbs in Pharmacy Practice."
Beyond her accomplishments at ABU, Professor Ibrahim also served as Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and later Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ilorin during a sabbatical appointment, demonstrating exceptional leadership in pharmaceutical education.
Her outstanding contributions to research, academic administration, and community service have earned her several awards and recognitions, reflecting her commitment to excellence and professional development.
Professor Hajara Ibrahim's remarkable journey continues to inspire pharmacists, researchers, academics, and especially young women across Nigeria to pursue excellence, break barriers, and contribute meaningfully to scientific advancement.
