NERDC Hosts SSAUTHRIAI Research Institutes Sectoral Council Meeting in Abuja
Sheda, Abuja – 5 June 2026— The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, hosted the Research Institutes Sectoral Council Meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, SSAUTHRIAI, on Wednesday and Thursday, 3–4 June 2026, at the NERDC Conference Centre, Sheda, Abuja.
The meeting brought together members of the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, National Administrative Council, NAC, and delegates from research institutes across the country to deliberate on sectoral issues and chart a course for the continued growth and development of research institutions.
NERDC Pledges Commitment to Staff Welfare
In his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu, expressed appreciation to SSAUTHRIAI for choosing NERDC as host, noting that the decision reflected the union’s confidence and trust in the council.
Prof. Shehu emphasized that no organization can thrive without the dedication of its workforce, adding that employees give their best when their welfare is prioritized by leadership. He commended the union for its commitment to promoting members’ welfare, stating that cordial relationships and harmonious industrial relations are fostered when management remains responsive to staff needs.
Despite challenges facing the council, he said management remains committed to maintaining cordial and harmonious relations with staff. He appealed to the union to be mindful of some of the council’s difficulties, particularly inadequate funding.
The Executive Secretary also disclosed that his administration had resolved to conclude staff promotions within the first half of every year to prevent employees from being placed at a disadvantage in career progression.
Prof. Shehu wished all delegates a pleasant stay and expressed hope that their deliberations would be fruitful and contribute significantly to the growth and advancement of the union.
Union Leaders Stress Unity, Engagement
Earlier in her opening remarks, the President of the SSAUTHRIAI NERDC Chapter, Comrade Omotunde Adebayo, welcomed all delegates and appreciated those who travelled from different parts of the country to attend.
She described the meeting as a significant platform for constructive engagement, collective decision-making and the advancement of the union’s objectives. Comrade Adebayo urged delegates to actively participate in deliberations, emphasizing the need for unity, mutual understanding and shared commitment to members’ welfare and the progress of SSAUTHRIAI.
She expressed confidence that the resolutions reached would contribute positively to the growth and development of the union and its affiliated institutions.
Fraternal messages were also delivered by other union representatives, including the President of the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions, ASURI, Dr. Olusegun Ogundare, and the Secretary of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, Mr. Prince Alexander Uwem.
In her vote of thanks, the Host Chapter Secretary, Comrade Judith Akobundu, thanked all delegates who travelled from far and near to attend the sectoral meeting and prayed for journey mercies for all participants.
