MSSN A-Zone, CCSI Hold Community Session on Maternal Health in Zaria Under FCC Project

 

Zaria, Kaduna State— The Centre for Communication and Social Impact, CCSI, in collaboration with the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, A-Zone, has held a community engagement session on antenatal care, birth planning, and facility delivery in Tudun Wada, Zaria.

The session took place on Saturday, 13th June 2026, at Baba Ahmed LEA Primary School, Tudun Wada, under the Faith & Cultural Champions, FCC, Project.

Dr. Mukhtar M. Musa, Provost of the College of Nursing, ABUTH Zaria, facilitated the session. He spoke on the importance of early antenatal care, birth preparedness, identification of danger signs during pregnancy, and the critical need for skilled facility delivery.

Dr. Mardiyyah Imam Qasim, Grant Manager for IFCC MSSN and Ameerah of MSSN A-Zone, presented an overview of the FCC Project. Malam Muhammad Nuraddeen Abdullahi, FCC Project Consultant, was also on ground to support technical delivery. 

Other officials in attendance included the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, FCC; Finance Officer, IFCC MSSN; Programme Officer, IFCC MSSN; Admin Officer, MSSN A-Zone; and other MSSN members within Zaria.

Community leaders present reaffirmed their commitment to ending unsafe delivery practices. They include Malam Ibrahim Umar, Chairman of the Islamic Scholars Association, Tudun Wada; Malam Isiyaku Muhammad, Mai Anguwar Unguwar Dandutse; and Alhaji Yusuf Abubakar, who represented the District Head of Tudun Wada.

Impact in numbers:

1. 101 participants attended the session  

2. 78 women, 16 men, and 7 persons with disabilities actively engaged  

3. Full representation was achieved, with married adolescent girls and young women, husbands, male and female reference groups, and religious and community leaders present

Participants reached a strong community resolve to tackle delays in seeking care, discourage patronage of unqualified birth attendants, and improve male involvement in maternal health.

The FCC Project is designed to leverage faith and cultural structures to drive positive health-seeking behaviour and reduce maternal and newborn mortality in underserved communities.
