League of Imams and Alfas Disowns Unauthorized Fundraising Activities, Warns Public Against Impostors
The League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land has distanced itself from individuals and groups allegedly organizing fundraising programmes, launches, and other activities while falsely claiming to represent or act on behalf of the organization.
In a statement signed by top Islamic leaders across the South-West, the League described such claims as misleading and unauthorized, warning members of the Muslim community and the general public to be cautious when dealing with persons presenting themselves as affiliates or representatives of the body without official approval.
The organization emphasized that it remains the apex Islamic body in South-West Nigeria, established in 1964 by renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory and other founding fathers across the former Western Region. According to the statement, the League has no connection whatsoever with the fundraising activities being carried out by the individuals and groups in question.
The League noted that it continues to serve as the recognized umbrella body for Imams, Alfas, and the Muslim Ummah across the 137 Local Government Areas and 113 Local Council Development Areas in the six South-West states. It added that since its establishment, the organization has consistently promoted Islamic values, unity, peace, moderation, and the welfare of Muslims throughout Yoruba Land.
The Islamic body therefore urged community leaders, philanthropists, corporate organizations, government institutions, and members of the public to verify claims of affiliation before offering support or recognition to any group purporting to act on its behalf.
According to the statement, any individual or organization claiming to be an extension, affiliate, representative, or authorized organ of the League without the express approval of its constituted leadership should not be accorded legitimacy.
The League further condemned attempts to exploit its name, reputation, and decades-long legacy for personal or group interests, warning that such actions could create confusion and sow division within the Muslim community.
Reaffirming its commitment to its founding objectives, the organization said it would continue to work towards strengthening harmony, cooperation, and Islamic brotherhood among Muslims in Yoruba Land and across Nigeria.
The statement concluded with prayers for unity among Muslims, peace and stability in the South-West and the country at large, and divine guidance for all stakeholders in the service of Islam and humanity.
The disclaimer was jointly endorsed by several prominent Islamic leaders, including the President of the League and Chief Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere; the Vice President and Chief Imam of Ogun State, Sheikh Saadullah Bamgbola; the Grand Life Patron and Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh AbdulGaniy Agbotomokekere; the Chief Imam of Osun State, Sheikh Musa Rabiu Animasahun; the Chief Imam of Ondo State, Sheikh Dr. AbdulHakeem Yayi Akorede; the Chief Imam of Ikorodu Division and Chairman of Rabita in Lagos, Sheikh Seifudeen Oloworibi Ademoritan; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sheikh Muhammad Habibullah Adam Abdullahi El-Ilory; the Grand Mufti of Yoruba Land, Sheikh AbdulRasaq AbdulAzeez Ishola; and the Secretary-General of the League, Sheikh Mustapha Oseni Adewale Hamzat (Dohak).
