Katsina Govt Confirms Death of Retired Maj-Gen Rabe Abubakar in Bandits’ Captivity
Katsina, Nigeria— The Katsina State Government has announced the death of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity while held by bandits, despite efforts by the state and security agencies to secure his release.
The announcement was made in a press release dated Friday, 13th June 2025, signed by Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, Hon. Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.
Died from Health Complications in Captivity
According to the statement, the late general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension while in bandits’ captivity.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the government said.
The state government described his abduction and subsequent death as “not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country.”
Governor Radda Mourns, Vows Justice
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and Nigerians. He described the incident as a “dark moment” and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against criminal elements threatening peace in communities.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice. We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement read.
Call for Collective Action
The government said the late Retired Maj-Gen Rabe Abubakar’s death underscores the severity of insecurity in the state and the need for sustained operations against banditry. It reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with federal security forces to dismantle criminal networks and protect residents.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abdulkadir rest in eternal peace,” the release concluded.
The passing of the retired senior military officer has drawn condolences from across the country, with many calling for renewed efforts to end kidnappings and banditry in the North-West.
