FCT Swears In Newly Elected Council Chairmen, Charges Them on Grassroots Development
ABUJA— The Federal Capital Territory Administration on Monday, June 15, 2026, swore in newly elected chairmen for the six area councils of the FCT, urging them to prioritize grassroots development, security, and service delivery.
The inauguration ceremony held at the FCT Minister’s Conference Room in Area 11, Abuja, was presided over by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The newly sworn-in chairmen will lead Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali area councils for the next four years following the February 2026 council elections.
Charge to New Leaders
Addressing the chairmen and their deputies, Wike congratulated them on their victory but reminded them that “leadership is about service, not titles.” He charged them to justify the mandate given by residents by focusing on critical areas including road rehabilitation, primary healthcare, education, sanitation, and rural electrification.
“You must bridge the gap between government and the people at the grassroots. The people voted for you because they believe you can deliver. Do not disappoint them,” the Minister said.
He also urged the council leaders to work closely with security agencies to tackle crime, banditry, and other threats within their domains, noting that peace is essential for development.
Focus on Unity and Accountability
Wike warned against partisanship and ethnic politics at the local government level, stressing that the councils belong to all residents regardless of party, religion, or origin. He directed the chairmen to run open, transparent, and accountable administrations and to ensure monthly engagement with traditional rulers, youth groups, and community stakeholders.
The Minister disclosed that the FCT Administration would strengthen oversight of council funds to ensure resources are used for projects that directly impact citizens. “We will monitor what comes in and what goes out. The era of waste and excuses is over,” he added.
New Chairmen Respond
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the AMAC Chairman pledged their commitment to the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the development blueprint of the FCT Administration. He promised to run inclusive governments and deliver dividends of democracy within their first 100 days in office.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, members of the National Assembly representing the FCT, heads of security agencies, and other top government officials.
The swearing-in marks the start of a new tenure for the third set of democratically elected council chairmen since the FCT began conducting area council elections in 1998.
