Argungu, Kebbi State – The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, has called on residents of his emirate and other vulnerable communities to legally acquire firearms to defend themselves against incessant attacks by bandits and other criminal elements.

According to the monarch, communities constantly exposed to security threats should be allowed and encouraged to obtain licensed weapons through appropriate legal channels to protect their lives and property when security agencies cannot respond promptly.

He stressed that the possession of firearms must be done strictly in accordance with Nigerian laws and regulations, warning against the proliferation of illegal weapons. The emir noted that self-defence has become increasingly necessary in many rural communities facing repeated attacks by armed groups.

The royal father also urged government authorities to strengthen support for security agencies and community-based security initiatives to curb the activities of bandits, kidnappers and other criminal networks operating across the region.

The Emir of Argungu has consistently spoken on security challenges affecting northern Nigeria, advocating stronger collaboration among stakeholders, effective justice delivery and community participation in addressing insecurity.

Alhaji Samaila Mera, the 33rd Emir of Argungu, is one of the most influential traditional rulers in Kebbi State and has often used his position to advocate policies aimed at safeguarding the lives and welfare of his subjects.

His latest remarks are expected to reignite discussions on community self-defence, firearms regulation and the broader strategy for tackling banditry and rural insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region.
