Court Remands AAC Presidential Candidate Sowore in Kuje Prison Over Cybercrime Charges
Abuja, Nigeria – June 2026
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Custodial Centre, following the revocation of his bail last week.
The court also dismissed Sowore’s application asking the trial judge to recuse himself from the case over allegations of bias.
Bail revoked, Sowore remanded
Sowore was remanded after the court revoked his bail, paving the way for his detention at Kuje Custodial Centre pending further proceedings in the case. The former presidential candidate has been facing trial instituted by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Recusal application dismissed
In the same ruling, the court dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the withdrawal of the trial judge from the matter. The defense had argued that the judge was biased, but the court held that there was no sufficient basis to warrant recusal.
Cybercrime charge over Tinubu remark
Sowore is standing trial on cybercrime charges filed by the DSS. The charges relate to a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “a criminal.” Prosecutors say the statement violated provisions of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.
The case continues before the Federal High Court, Abuja, with the next hearing expected after Sowore’s remand at Kuje.
