BREAKING: Political Earthquake in House of Representatives as 13 Lawmakers Defect in One Day
Abuja, Nigeria – 2 June 2026— Nigeria’s House of Representatives witnessed a major wave of defections on Tuesday as at least 13 lawmakers switched political parties, highlighting the rapidly changing political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The most notable move was made by Kingsley Chinda, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Following his defection, Chinda also resigned from his position as Minority Leader, a development expected to trigger changes in the opposition leadership within the House.
In another significant development, six lawmakers from Oyo State left the PDP for the All Progressives Movement, APM, a move political observers believe could reshape the balance of power in the state and the South-West region.
The lawmakers from Oyo who joined the APM are:
1. Anthony Adebayo
2. Adedeji Olajide
3. Sunday Makanjuola
4. Oyedeji Oyeshina
5. Fola Oyekunle
6. Adigun Adekunle
Other lawmakers involved in the defections include:
1. Auwalu Gwalabe — PDP to APM
2. Shehu Dalhatu — APC to PDP
3. Etanabene Benedict — Labour Party to PDP
4. Alex Egbona — APC to PDP
5. Esosa Iyawe — APC to New Nigeria Peoples Democratic Congress, NDC
6. Gbefwi Gaza — Social Democratic Party, SDP, to Labour Party
Political analysts say the wave of defections reflects ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political space as parties position themselves for the 2027 elections. The developments are also expected to influence the distribution of political strength in the House of Representatives and shape future alliances among political actors.
As of the time of filing this report, the affected political parties are yet to issue detailed statements explaining the reasons behind the lawmakers’ decisions to switch affiliations.
