Bandits Abduct About 50 Elders in Zamfara After Failed Peace Talks
Maradun, Zamfara State, 10 June 2026— Bandits have kidnapped about 50 elders from Magami village in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, after the elders went to negotiate peace with the criminals without government approval, local officials said.
The abduction was confirmed by Maradun LGA Chairman, Bello Dorasa, on Monday.
Elders Went for Peace Talks
According to Dorasa, the elders left Magami/Faru District to meet bandits at their hideout in search of a truce. The move was made independently, without informing the state government.
“Mu muna gaba da batun sulhu da 'yan bindiga, kuma Gwamna Dauda Lawal bai taba goyon bayan hakan ba, amma ba tare da saninmu ba, mutanen suka zaɓi tafiya su yi sulhun,” Dorasa said.
Translation: “We are against negotiating with bandits, and Governor Dauda Lawal has never supported it, but without our knowledge, the people chose to go and negotiate.”
Alleged Mastermind Identified
Dorasa said a notorious bandit leader known as Jammo, who operates from Muntsira forest in Maradun LGA, is responsible for the abduction.
Government Stance
The chairman reiterated that the Zamfara State Government under Governor Dauda Lawal does not support dialogue with bandits, maintaining that security forces should be used to end banditry in the state.
Magami/Faru district has been one of the areas worst hit by bandit attacks in Zamfara, with frequent kidnappings and killings reported over the last year.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on rescue efforts for the abducted elders as of press time.
