Atiku Replies Babachir Lawal, Questions Credibility Claims on ADC Primaries

Abuja, Nigeria – 2 June 2026— Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to Babachir David Lawal, accusing the ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation of double standards over his criticism of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, primary process in Adamawa State.

In a statement issued Sunday, Atiku said the same primary process Lawal now dismisses as fraudulent also produced his cousin, Omar Suleiman, as the ADC governorship candidate in Adamawa State — a result Lawal has not criticised.

“Nigerians are entitled to ask whether the process was only credible when it favoured his family and only rigged when it produced a presidential candidate he did not support,” Atiku said.

The former vice president further argued that Lawal’s criticisms were driven more by dissatisfaction with the outcome of the primary than by genuine concerns about electoral integrity.

The exchange comes amid growing controversy within the ADC following its recent primaries and the exit of Lawal from the party. The dispute has deepened divisions within the Adamawa chapter, with party stakeholders debating the fairness of the process ahead of future elections.

Neither Babachir Lawal nor ADC officials in Adamawa had issued a further response at the time of filing this report.
