Atiku Demands Suspension of Gbajabiamila Over Alleged ₦400m Bribery Scandal, Calls for Independent Probe
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, over allegations of bribery and what he described as a credibility crisis surrounding the 2026 national budget.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Atiku Media Office, the former Vice President said President Tinubu must demonstrate genuine commitment to transparency and accountability by allowing an independent investigation into allegations that Gbajabiamila received ₦400 million in connection with an appointment.
The call follows allegations made by Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who identified himself as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), claiming he paid ₦400 million to secure his appointment.
Atiku argued that Gbajabiamila's reported defence—that the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council does not exist—has only deepened public concerns rather than resolving them.
According to him, if the agency truly does not exist, it raises serious questions about why ₦27.4 billion was allegedly allocated to it in the 2026 national budget.
"How can you allocate ₦27.4 billion in the budget to a government agency that doesn't exist without leaving more questions than answers?" Atiku asked.
He maintained that the Chief of Staff's explanation has created more credibility issues for the administration and cast doubt on the integrity of the 2026 budget.
The former Vice President described the matter as an alleged case of "colossal budgetary fraud" that should not be dismissed through what he termed weak and unconvincing explanations.
Atiku urged President Tinubu to immediately suspend Gbajabiamila to allow for a transparent and independent investigation into the allegations.
He stressed that good governance is founded on accountability and transparency, insisting that no public official should be shielded from scrutiny because of personal or political relationships.
"You can't achieve transparency and accountability by protecting your family and friends. President Tinubu must lead by example by holding his Chief of Staff to the same standards of accountability as other public officials. ₦27 billion is not a joke. The rule of law must prevail in this issue. Let President Tinubu prove to Nigerians that he is sincerely committed to accountability in his administration," Atiku said.
The statement was signed by the Atiku Media Office and dated June 30, 2026.
