APC Suffers Fresh Blow as Rep. Abubakar Baba Zango Dumps Party Amid Growing Political Realignments
Abuja, Nigeria – 15 April 2026— The All Progressives Congress, APC, has suffered another political setback following the resignation of Hon. Abubakar Baba Zango, the member representing Yola North, Yola South, and Girei Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Zango’s exit comes amid increasing political realignments across the country, with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, continuing to attract prominent political figures and elected officials dissatisfied with the direction of the ruling party.
In a resignation letter dated 15 April 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Yola North Ward in Adamawa State, the federal lawmaker announced his immediate departure from the party, citing recent developments at the constituency level that had made it impossible for him to continue participating meaningfully in APC activities.
The lawmaker noted that while he appreciated the opportunity he had to serve under the APC platform, prevailing circumstances within the party had compelled him to reassess his political future.
Political observers say the resignation is another indication of growing discontent within the ruling party, particularly as preparations begin for future electoral contests. The APC has witnessed a series of defections and internal disagreements in recent months, raising concerns about party cohesion in several states.
Although Zango did not officially disclose his next political destination in the resignation letter, sources within Adamawa’s political circles suggest that the lawmaker is among several politicians exploring alliances with the ADC, a party that has recently emerged as a rallying point for opposition figures seeking a credible alternative to the APC and the PDP.
Despite leaving the ruling party, Zango reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Yola North, Yola South, and Girei Federal Constituency, pledging to continue prioritising their interests and welfare above partisan considerations.
His resignation is expected to strengthen ongoing discussions about a broader opposition coalition ahead of future elections, with the ADC increasingly being viewed as a platform capable of accommodating politicians from diverse political backgrounds.
The development marks yet another challenge for the APC in Adamawa State and could reshape the political landscape in one of the country’s most strategically important states.
