ADC Names Amaechi as Atiku’s Running Mate for 2027 Presidential Election
Abuja, June 15, 2026 — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.
The announcement was contained in a press statement dated June 15, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mullam Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives from Nigeria’s various geopolitical zones. The party said Amaechi emerged as the preferred vice-presidential candidate after finishing as runner-up in the ADC presidential primaries.
The ADC described the proposed Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a partnership between two experienced political figures whose combined leadership credentials would provide the capacity needed to address Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance challenges.
The party highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later as Minister of Transportation under the federal government. According to the statement, his tenure in public office was marked by investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and transportation development.
ADC officials argued that Amaechi’s experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government makes him one of Nigeria’s most seasoned political leaders. The party also cited his influence across the South-South region and Southern Nigeria, as well as his reputation as a coalition builder, as key factors behind his selection.
The statement further emphasized that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a national alliance capable of bridging regional, generational, and political divides. The party said the combination of Atiku’s experience in governance and economic management with Amaechi’s administrative and political background offers Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.
“At a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message that the ADC is prepared to govern and deliver results,” the statement said.
The party expressed confidence that the partnership would strengthen its growing coalition and inspire support across the country. It also called on party members, coalition partners, civil society organizations, youth groups, women leaders, and Nigerians of goodwill to rally behind the ticket as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
If officially ratified by the party’s relevant organs, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would become one of the major political alignments expected to shape the contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.
