ZLP Chairman Calls for AGF’s Resignation Over Alleged Plot to Deregister Opposition Parties

ABUJA, Nigeria— Zenith Labour Party Chairman Chief Dan Nwanyanwu has called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, accusing him of gross incompetence and an attempt to illegally deregister opposition parties.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Nwanyanwu alleged that the Ministry of Justice is pursuing a clandestine plan to stifle the opposition by making false claims about the registration status of smaller parties, including the ZLP and the African Democratic Congress.

He said the AGF’s actions threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability and exceed the constitutional mandate of the office by interfering with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s duties.

“You cannot use the office of the Attorney General to settle political scores,” Nwanyanwu said. “The law is clear on how parties are registered and deregistered, and the AGF’s recent claims are not only false but a sign of administrative failure.”

The ZLP chairman also suggested that the outcome of the 2023 elections would have been different if opposition parties had been treated fairly under the law.

Nwanyanwu said the ZLP would take legal action if the alleged plot continues. He added that the party is aligning with others, including the ADC, to resist what it described as executive overreach.

The Attorney General’s office had not issued a response as of Thursday. Observers say the dispute could escalate into a legal battle if INEC does not publicly clarify the status of the affected parties.
