Yobe APC Governorship Aspirants Reject ‘Consensus Candidate’ Plan, Demand Fair Primaries

ABUJA, Nigeria— Governorship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State have rejected the reported adoption of a consensus candidate for the 2027 election, describing the move as a violation of the Electoral Act 2026 and the party’s constitution.

In a statement issued after a meeting in Abuja on May 7, 2026, the aspirants said the decision did not follow due process and would not be accepted. They insisted that candidate selection must follow all laid-down rules, including consensus where possible, to produce a credible candidate acceptable to the party in Yobe.

The aspirants stated that if a consensus cannot be reached, the party must conduct direct primaries that are free, fair, and transparent in line with APC guidelines.

They also accused the Yobe State APC chairman of open bias, saying the development had eroded their confidence in his ability to oversee a credible primary election. As a result, they called for his removal from any role in organizing or supervising the governorship primary in the state.

The aspirants reaffirmed their support for the APC national leadership and declared backing for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

The statement was issued in Abuja on May 7, 2026.
