Yobe ADC Picks Geidam as Consensus Candidate for 2027
DAMATURU — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yobe State has adopted former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commissioner Kassim Gana Geidam as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced on Friday in Damaturu by the party’s State Secretary, Mamu Alhaji Muhammad, following extensive consultations with stakeholders and governorship aspirants. ADC officials said the consensus arrangement was aimed at strengthening internal unity and avoiding disputes ahead of the polls.
A career in public service and law
ADC described Geidam as an experienced administrator, legal practitioner, and technocrat with a long record in public service. He served as Resident Electoral Commissioner with INEC, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Yobe State, pioneer General Manager of Yobe Line, and first Chairman of Yusufari Local Government Area.
He was also a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee at the 1994 National Constitutional Conference, which laid the foundation for Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. Beyond public service, Geidam held senior roles in banking, including Head of Legal Department, Regional Director, and Group Head at Habib Nigeria Bank Limited.
Political significance for 2027
Party leaders said Geidam’s background in electoral management, administration, and his local political network made him the preferred choice among stakeholders. Analysts note that his emergence reflects a growing trend among opposition parties to field candidates with technocratic credentials as voters demand competence and governance reforms.
ADC described him as a unifying figure known for promoting inclusivity across ethnic and tribal lines, and said he is “humble, accessible, and committed to inclusive governance”.
Yobe State has remained a stronghold of the All Progressives Congress and its predecessors for over two decades. ADC leaders said the consensus candidate would help position the party to challenge APC’s dominance in the 2027 governorship race.
The party called on members, supporters, and residents of Yobe State to rally behind Geidam’s candidacy as preparations intensify. bfb5
