Tension in Kwara APC Ahead of 2027
ILORIN— Fresh tension has emerged within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over claims that some party stakeholders are seeking to influence the selection of governorship candidates for the 2027 elections.
Party members have alleged that interests linked to the presidency are sidelining professionals and technocrats in favor of politically connected loyalists. The controversy centers on reports that Senator Saliu Mustapha and Yahaya Seriki are being promoted as preferred candidates for the governorship race.
Some aggrieved APC members described the move as an attempt to prioritize political loyalty over competence and merit.
“This is no longer about Kwara people choosing their best,” one APC chieftain reportedly said, warning that the state risks becoming a “political settlement ground.”
The development has deepened internal divisions within the ruling party in Kwara, with concerns raised about the future of the APC’s “Ó Tó Gẹ́” movement and its original focus on fairness and merit-based leadership. Party insiders say attempts to impose candidates could trigger a wider crisis ahead of the 2027 elections.
The situation in Kwara comes amid similar succession and power struggles in other APC-controlled states across Nigeria.
Party officials in Kwara have not publicly commented on the allegations.
