Speculation Grows Over Kwankwaso’s Meetings with Tinubu as He Joins NDC with Obi Ahead of 2027
Speculation over the political alignment of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has intensified after reports of multiple closed-door meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since 2023, even as he announced a move to join the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) alongside Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
The claims, circulating widely on social media and attributed to commentator Huzaifah Nasiru, allege that Kwankwaso and Tinubu held at least six private meetings between June 2023 and April 2026.
According to the account, the alleged meetings took place in Paris on June 9, 2023; at the Aso Rock Villa on March 5, 2024, and July 8, 2025; again in December 2025; on January 20, 2026; and most recently on April 28, 2026, alongside Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The post argues that Kwankwaso’s 1.5 million votes in Kano during the 2023 election were decisive, suggesting that if those votes had gone to Atiku Abubakar, the outcome could have been different. It contrasts this with Peter Obi’s 6.1 million votes across 11 states, noting that Obi has not been reported to have held similar meetings with Tinubu.
It also asserts that Kwankwaso is aware of the challenges facing the North, including poverty, insecurity, and low literacy rates, but has prioritised personal political ambition over regional interests.
Despite the allegations, Kwankwaso has moved to align with Obi under the NDC structure. The alliance under ADC platform, confirmed in late 2025, is seen as an attempt to consolidate opposition forces against the APC ahead of 2027. Both leaders have publicly framed the coalition as a platform for national reform and youth-driven politics.
There has been no official confirmation from Kwankwaso, the NNPP, the NDC, or the Presidency regarding the content or purpose of the alleged meetings with Tinubu. Both Kwankwaso and Tinubu have previously described their 2023 encounter as part of broader political consultations.
The NNPP, ADC, NDC, and APC have yet to issue formal statements on the claims. Political observers note that high-level consultations between opposition figures and the Presidency are not uncommon in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the run-up to elections.
