SDP Produces Presidential Candidate at National Convention in Abuja


ABUJA— The Social Democratic Party (SDP) held its National Convention on Wednesday 20th May, 2026 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, where it produced its presidential candidate and elected new party leadership.

During the convention, new members of the National Executive Committee were elected, amendments to the party constitution were adopted, and resolutions from the NEC meeting were ratified and upheld.

Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission and independent observers monitored the exercise in line with the Electoral Act. The party said the process was conducted peacefully and in a transparent and credible manner.

Major General Hamza Al-Mustapha endorsed Hon. Olayiwola Abimbola Atanda for the party’s presidential ticket, citing the need for national unity and cohesion. He urged supporters to vote for SDP candidates at all levels.

Alh. Shehu Musa Gabam was also re-elected as SDP National Chairman for another four-year term. He pledged to promote unity, discipline, membership growth, and inclusive leadership as part of efforts to rebuild a stronger SDP.

In addition,  Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Gombe, Prince A.A and allies were expelled from the party.
