Supporters Push Atiku Abubakar as 2027 Alternative, Citing Record and Legal Battles
Supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are positioning him as the leading alternative to “rescue Nigeria” in the 2027 election, pointing to his role in economic reforms, his legal record, and his stance on anti-corruption.
In statements from varioussupportgroups, backers describe Atiku as a unifier who “cares and thinks about Nigeria every other day.” They highlight his tenure as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation under President Olusegun Obasanjo, arguing that the policies helped expand telecoms, banking, and port services in Nigeria.
Atiku’s supporters also point to his legal confrontations with sitting presidents as evidence of his political independence. They note that he was involved in multiple court cases with President Obasanjo while serving as Vice President, and later faced years of investigations and criticism during the Buhari administration.
“Buhari searched, probed and hunted. He found nothing to indict him,” one statement claimed, referencing high-profile investigations into public officials during that period.
The group also referenced Atiku’s public challenges to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on issues of age, education, and past records. They argue that despite intense scrutiny, no corruption case has been successfully proven against him.
Supporters credit Atiku with laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s privatisation programme, which they say enabled the expansion of mobile phones, banking services, and port operations. They contrast this with what they describe as the reversal of key reforms under subsequent administrations, arguing that the changes contributed to current economic hardship.
They further criticize the APC-led government for failing to add value to the economy since 2015, citing the depreciation of the naira and rising food costs.
“Whenever they call out Atiku, tell them to show what they have done better,” the statement said.
Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007, has contested the presidency multiple times. He is expected to be a contender in the 2027 race under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
