Presidency breaks silence on renaming Nigeria and abolishing Shari'ah law

Presidency Dismisses Claim Tinubu Plans to Rename Nigeria, Scrap Sharia Law

ABUJA— The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report claiming President Bola Tinubu is seeking constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria and abolish Sharia law in the North.

In a statement on Thursday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga said there was “no truth” to the story, which alleged that Tinubu planned to change the country’s name to the _United States of Nigeria_ and scrap Sharia law in the northern region.

Onanuga described the report, which cited anonymous sources, as “part of a dubious plot by desperate politicians to create disaffection, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the story, calling its purveyors “agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.”

The Presidency also denied claims that Tinubu would send a bill code-named _Project True Federation_ to the National Assembly by Dec. 15. It stressed that constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and approval by 24 state Houses of Assembly, and are not subject to presidential whim.

According to the statement, Tinubu remains focused on advancing his administration’s economic reforms and delivering “more tangible dividends” to Nigerians.

Onanuga warned citizens to be wary of fake and divisive reports expected to circulate as political campaigns for the January 2027 elections begin.
