“Peter Obi Has Lost Something Significant” -----Dr. Alex Adum.
ABUJA, Nigeria — Dr. Alex Adum, a legal practitioner and former Attorney General of Benue State, has argued that recent political developments have weakened Peter Obi more than the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during a live broadcast on Channels Television on Monday, Adum claimed that many supporters who initially aligned with Obi within the ADC have refused to follow him to the NDC, creating what he described as a major political setback for the former Anambra State governor.
“Peter Obi is actually the one who has lost something significant, because a significant number of those who joined the ADC with him have refused to follow him to the NDC,” Adum stated during the interview.
The former Attorney General maintained that the strength of a political coalition lies more in its institutional structure and collective loyalty than in any single individual. According to him, contrary to widespread expectations, the ADC has remained stable despite Obi’s departure, with many party members choosing to stay.
Adum argued that the development shows the party’s foundation remains intact and functional, adding that the anticipated collapse or mass defection from the ADC did not materialize.
He further noted that Nigeria’s opposition landscape is undergoing rapid changes ahead of the 2027 general elections, as several political figures continue to reposition themselves across different platforms in pursuit of broader alliances and electoral relevance.
According to him, the ADC may even emerge stronger from the situation because the members who stayed behind are more committed to the party’s long-term vision and objectives.
In his concluding remarks, Adum emphasized that the broader goal of opposition politicians should remain the formation of a united front capable of challenging the ruling government in the next election cycle.
He added that while political defections and realignments are expected in the build-up to 2027, the ultimate focus should be on presenting Nigerians with a credible and cohesive alternative platform.
