Olofu Picks Benue South Senate Form, Kicks Off 2027 Race

ABUJA, Nigeria— Former Benue State Commissioner for Finance, David Olofu, has formally entered the race for the Benue South Senatorial District seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Olofu and his delegation obtained the All Progressives Congress nomination and expression of interest forms at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, May 7, 2026. He becomes the first aspirant to formally declare for the seat currently representing the Idoma-Igede nation.

Addressing supporters and journalists after collecting the forms, Olofu said the early move was deliberate.

“By the grace of God, today, we have picked the form to contest the Benue South Senatorial District election,” he said. “We are the first to pick the form, and by 2027, we shall also be the first to be declared winners.”

The aspirant framed his campaign around a “divine mandate” and pledged to run on early mobilisation and strategic planning.

Political observers say Olofu’s early entry could help consolidate grassroots support across the district’s rural wards, set the campaign narrative, and demonstrate financial capacity ahead of other aspirants.

Olofu served as Benue State’s finance commissioner and supporters argue his experience gives him insight into the state’s economic challenges and federal-state fiscal relations. They say this positions him to advocate for the district’s share of federal allocations and infrastructure projects in the Senate.

The Benue South Senatorial District is considered one of the most competitive zones in North-Central Nigeria. Analysts expect perennial issues such as youth unemployment, agricultural subsidies and security to dominate the contest.

No other aspirant has formally picked forms for the seat. Olofu’s move has already raised political activity in the district ahead of the 2027 polls.
