Maigari: Obi’s ADC Exit Sets Back Igbo Presidency Push by Two Decades

ABUJA, Nigeria — The reported departure of Peter Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has drawn fresh political reactions, with Hon. Kasimu Maigari warning that the move could significantly delay the long-standing push for a president of Igbo extraction.

Maigari, a member of the ADC National Legislators’ Forum, said Obi’s exit represents a major setback for what he described as a carefully evolving political project aimed at producing a Nigerian president from the South-East. He argued that the development has effectively pushed the realization of an Igbo presidency ambition “back by about two decades.”

According to Maigari, Obi’s involvement in a broad-based coalition within the ADC had begun to restore confidence among stakeholders advocating for equity, inclusion, and power rotation. He noted that the coalition was gaining traction across different regions and positioning the South-East for stronger consideration in future presidential contests.

He expressed concern that Obi’s withdrawal at a critical moment could weaken the momentum already built, stressing that political consistency and strategic alliances are crucial to achieving national power shifts. High-profile defections, he added, often disrupt long-term calculations and can fracture emerging political consensus.

While acknowledging Obi’s right to make personal political decisions, Maigari cautioned that the implications extend beyond individual ambition to affect broader regional expectations and national balance. He urged South-East political leaders to remain focused on a unified agenda capable of advancing their collective aspirations.

Observers say the debate underscores the continuing role of zoning and power rotation in Nigeria’s political discourse as alignments take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts also note that Obi’s political movements remain highly influential, particularly among young voters and reform-minded constituencies.

The reactions highlight the fragile nature of political coalitions and the complex interplay between personal ambition and regional expectations in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
