Legal Action Against NDC Registration Raises Uncertainty Ahead of 2027 Elections

ABUJA, Nigeria— The registration of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) is facing a court challenge, with Dr. Umar Ardo saying proceedings are underway to contest its approval by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and a leading advocate of the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), alleged that irregularities marred the NDC’s registration process. He stated that the matter is before a competent court and expressed confidence that the registration could be overturned.

“We are in court over NDC irregularities in registration by INEC. The court will cancel the NDC registration,” Ardo said.

The lawsuit introduces new uncertainty into Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NDC recently emerged as part of ongoing coalition efforts among opposition figures, and a ruling in favour of the plaintiffs could affect its status and activities.

Analysts note that the case may test INEC’s procedures for party registration and could influence coalition talks among opposition groups seeking to challenge the ruling establishment. Ardo’s role in the League of Northern Democrats and his promotion of the ADA reflect broader efforts to consolidate political interests in the North and other regions.

INEC has not yet responded publicly to the claims or provided details on the alleged irregularities. Legal experts say a judicial decision affecting a party’s registration could have implications for electoral participation, candidate nominations, and alliance-building ahead of the polls.

Stakeholders across the political spectrum are expected to monitor the case closely, given its potential to reshape the configuration of opposition politics before 2027.
