Kwankwaso Has Never Delivered Kano for a Presidential Candidate

ABUJA — Political analyst AbdulAziz Na’ibi Abubakar has argued that former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has a record of failing to deliver Kano State for presidential candidates, citing election results from 2003 to 2023.

In a statement on Monday, Abubakar said the pattern showed Kwankwaso’s limited influence in delivering the state at the presidential level, and suggested that Peter Obi could face the same outcome if he relied on Kwankwaso for Kano.

Abubakar pointed to several elections to support his claim:

1. 2003: Muhammadu Buhari secured 1.6 million votes in Kano, while Kwankwaso, then governor, did not deliver the state to Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP.

2. 2007: Buhari received 1 million votes in Kano. Kwankwaso again failed to deliver the state for Umaru Yar’Adua and the PDP.

3. 2011: Buhari garnered 1.6 million votes in Kano even with incumbent governor Ibrahim Shekarau on the ballot. Kwankwaso, as the PDP gubernatorial candidate, did not deliver Kano to Goodluck Jonathan. Abubakar added that Kwankwaso relied on Buhari’s base to reclaim the governorship against Shekarau’s candidate, Salihu Sagir Takai.

4. 2019: Buhari obtained 1.4 million votes in Kano. Kwankwaso failed to deliver the state for Atiku Abubakar and the PDP, losing all three senatorial seats and all House of Representatives seats in the state to the APC.

5. 2023: Running as a presidential candidate, Kwankwaso received 997,279 votes in Kano, falling short of 1 million votes for his own bid.

Abubakar also referenced Kwankwaso’s 2015 claim on national television that he delivered 1.9 million votes to Buhari. He argued that Kwankwaso instead benefited from Buhari’s popularity to win his second term as governor in 2011 and a Senate seat in 2015.

“History shows that Kwankwaso has never successfully delivered Kano to a presidential candidate,” Abubakar said. “Now, Peter Obi is set to experience the same disappointment that Atiku, Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan faced by relying on Kwankwaso to deliver Kano.”
