Kokstad Correctional Centre Gets Pharmacy, Art Gallery, and 48 Vehicles to Boost Service Delivery
The National Commissioner of South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services, Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, will officially open a new pharmacy facility and an art gallery, and hand over 48 newly acquired vehicles to the KwaZulu-Natal Region at the Kokstad Management Area on Friday, 15 May 2026.
According to a media advisory issued on 14 May 2026, the initiative forms part of efforts to implement priorities outlined in the 2026/27 Budget Vote presented to Parliament on 13 May 2026.
The department said the new facilities are aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening rehabilitation outcomes across correctional centres. The pharmacy is expected to enhance healthcare services through better access to pharmaceuticals and improved medication management. The art gallery will showcase artistic and handcrafted works produced by offenders through rehabilitation and skills development programmes.
Officials said the allocation of 48 new vehicles to KwaZulu-Natal will significantly improve operational mobility across the region.
The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre and is expected to draw departmental officials, stakeholders, and invited guests as part of the department’s broader commitment to corrections as a societal responsibility.
