Keyamo Criticizes NDC Over Zoning of 2027 Presidential Ticket to South
Speaking on Monday, Keyamo said the move was “an insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians” and dismissed it as “political 419.”
“The decision of NDC is an insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians; it is nothing but political 419,” he said. “So, what happens if Peter Obi changes party, assuming he wins, or as leader of the NDC he gets the NEC of the party to reverse the decision if in the unlikely event he wins? This is just a joke taken too far.”
Keyamo also commented on speculation around former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible candidacy, stating that he believed Jonathan was not constitutionally eligible to run.
“Jonathan is not constitutionally eligible to run — it is as simple as that. The Supreme Court will most likely disqualify him,” he said. “And I think he knows because they are dangling the ticket of the PDP that does not exist in law before him — the Turaki-led PDP that cannot field candidates. That is double tragedy for him. But I think they just want to participate in an academic exercise.”
The NDC has not yet issued an official response to the minister’s remarks. The party announced earlier this month that it would zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South as part of its strategy for the next general election.
Political parties in Nigeria have begun early positioning ahead of the 2027 polls, with zoning and candidate eligibility emerging as key points of debate.
