ATIKU ABUBAKAR: THE FATHER OF NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY

History repeatedly demonstrates that political defeat does not necessarily signify the end of a noble journey. On the contrary, some of the world’s most celebrated statesmen endured numerous setbacks before eventually ascending to positions of historic greatness. One of the most compelling examples remains the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

In 1832, Abraham Lincoln suffered his first electoral defeat when he contested for a seat in the Illinois State Legislature. Yet, rather than retreating into despair, he persevered with remarkable determination, steadily cultivating his political philosophy and public reputation.

In 1838, he encountered another setback in his bid to become Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, a position decided by legislative votes.

Again, in 1843, Lincoln failed to secure the Whig Party nomination for the United States Congress.

By 1848, he lost his re-election bid to remain in Congress, further extending his long catalogue of political disappointments.

In 1854, he contested for the United States Senate but was defeated after an alliance between Democrats and anti-Nebraska Whigs worked against his candidacy.

Two years later, in 1856, Lincoln lost the Republican Party’s nomination contest for the office of Vice President of the United States.

In 1858, despite his now-famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, he once again suffered defeat in the Senate election.

However, history would ultimately vindicate his resilience. On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln emerged victorious in the United States presidential election, and on March 4, 1861, he was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States of America. Today, Lincoln is immortalized as one of the greatest democratic leaders in modern history — a symbol of perseverance, conviction, and statesmanship.

In a similar vein, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has, over the course of three decades, persistently pursued the presidency of Nigeria. He contested presidential elections in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. Although electoral victory has thus far eluded him, millions of Nigerians continue to admire his consistency, courage, political experience, and enduring commitment to national development.

Supporters frequently highlight his policy-driven approach to governance, particularly his advocacy for national unity, economic revitalization, educational advancement, institutional reforms, enhanced national security, and the establishment of a more transparent and structured framework for the management of Nigeria’s vast mineral resources.

Following his reported emergence as the presidential flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), many of his supporters remain optimistic and prayerful that destiny may yet favour him in the 2027 general election, should Providence permit.

To these supporters, Nigeria’s democratic future requires leadership anchored on justice, competence, inclusion, and national cohesion. They argue that the nation must continue striving toward a democratic culture that transcends ethnicity, regionalism, and divisive politics.

For many, the appeal of Atiku Abubakar does not necessarily rest on the assumption that he is flawless or singularly qualified above all others. Rather, it is rooted in the perception of him as a statesman deeply committed to the vision of “One Nigeria,” a leader widely regarded as accommodating across ethnic and regional divides, and a politician whose governance agenda is articulated through detailed and structured policy proposals.

Indeed, the story of Abraham Lincoln serves as a timeless reminder that persistence, patience, and unwavering dedication can eventually transform repeated defeats into historic triumphs. In politics, as in life, resilience often becomes the bridge between disappointment and destiny.
