Ex-Sokoto Deputy Governor Manir Dan’iya Emerges ADC Consensus Candidate for 2027

SOKOTO — Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by his former Press Secretary, Aminu Abdullahi Abubakar. Dan’iya’s emergence followed days of consultations and negotiations among ADC stakeholders in Sokoto.

From deputy governor to ADC flagbearer

Dan’iya served as deputy governor of Sokoto State from 23 November 2018 to 29 May 2023 under former Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. He was first appointed to the position in November 2018 after the Sokoto State House of Assembly confirmed his nomination.

Before becoming deputy governor, he was Commissioner for Local Governments and Community Development, and previously served as Special Adviser to Tambuwal during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011 and 2015. His political career began in 2003 when he was appointed Sole Administrator of Kware Local Government Area, later serving as elected Chairman of the council.

Background and education

Born in Kware, Sokoto State, Dan’iya holds a BSc in Economics Education from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He also obtained a Higher Diploma in Accounting and Finance, a Professional Diploma in Public Account and Audit, a Diploma in Computer Studies, a Diploma in Arabic, and certificates in Local Government Administration and Arabic studies from various institutions in Sokoto.

He holds the traditional title of _Walin Sokoto_, conferred on him by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on 29 October 2020.

Party’s strategy for 2027

ADC leaders said the consensus arrangement was aimed at strengthening the party’s chances of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto. At least 10 aspirants had indicated interest in the party’s governorship ticket, including former Ambassador to Jordan, Faruk Malami Yabo.

Dan’iya said his emergence reflects “a renewed commitment to leadership anchored on development, unity, and service delivery in Sokoto State”. He thanked Tambuwal, party leaders, stakeholders, youths, women groups, and supporters for their backing, describing it as a collective push for purposeful governance.

“This support is a responsibility I deeply value, and together, we shall continue to work for the unity, stability, and development of Sokoto State,” he stated.

He called on ADC members and supporters to remain peaceful and united as political consultations continue ahead of the 2027 polls.
