Ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman Gets 75-Year Jail Term Over N33.8bn Hydro Funds Diversion
The Federal High Court has handed down a 75-year prison sentence to former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, for diverting N33.8 billion earmarked for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mamman diverted the funds through a network of ministry officials, private companies, and Bureau de Change operators.
Mamman, who recently purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship nomination forms for Taraba State, is also facing a separate charge at the FCT High Court in Maitama over the alleged diversion of N31 billion meant for the Mambilla Power Project.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Omotosho convicted Mamman on multiple counts, ordering that the sentences run consecutively. The combined term amounts to 75 years. The convict, who is currently at large and was absent during the last court sitting, will have the sentence commence from the day of his arrest.
The judge further directed all security agencies, including Interpol, to arrest Mamman wherever he is found. All monies and properties recovered from him are to be forfeited to the federal government. Additionally, Mamman is ordered to pay the outstanding balance of N22 billion meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects.
