El-Rufai’s Family Protests Detention by SSS, Alleges Denial of Medical Access
ABUJA — Family members and supporters of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai staged a protest in Abuja on Monday over his continued detention by the State Security Service.
The protesters, including Senator Lawal Adamu and relatives of the former governor, accused security authorities of denying El-Rufai access to medical care and subjecting him to repeated transfers between agencies, which they said contravene court directives.
Speaking outside the SSS facility, El-Rufai’s wife, Asia El-Rufai, said the family had been under surveillance and security pressure since the case began. She stated that the tension escalated after El-Rufai appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he was granted bail and the matter was adjourned.
According to her, El-Rufai was moved to the SSS facility during the proceedings despite prior arrangements on his custody. She alleged that after the court session he was taken to the DSS facility instead of being returned to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
The family said the transfers violate court orders and called for El-Rufai’s return to ICPC custody. They also alleged that he has been prevented from seeing his personal doctors, despite a court order permitting medical access. They said scheduled appointments and follow-up treatment have not been carried out.
El-Rufai has been in detention for 91 days, the family said. They stated that ICPC medical personnel had recommended an evaluation, but the process was interrupted.
Senator Lawal Adamu told journalists that El-Rufai returned to Nigeria voluntarily to honour official invitations and should be granted less restrictive bail conditions. He described the situation as politically motivated.
Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives and son of the former governor, criticized the bail conditions and detention process as excessive.
Dr. Uche Dialla of the El-Rufai Support Group alleged that the repeated movement of the former governor between agencies amounts to psychological pressure and violates standards for the treatment of detainees.
The SSS and DSS had not issued a public response to the allegations as of press time.
