Eight Aspirants Seek Rivers ADC Governorship Ticket as Amaechi Joins Presidential Race

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State — At least eight aspirants have declared interest in contesting the Rivers State governorship under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development was confirmed by the ADC State chairman-elect, Dr. Chukwudi Dimkpa, who said the party is witnessing increased political engagement and growing interest among prospective candidates.

Dimkpa described the surge as evidence that the ADC is becoming a preferred platform for “credible leadership and people-driven governance.” He said the aspirants include former public office holders, technocrats, private sector professionals, and political stakeholders.

Those reportedly interested include a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, former members of the House of Representatives, a former chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), a former Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), and other professionals across various sectors.

The party also welcomed the presidential ambition of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who recently obtained the ADC presidential nomination form. Dimkpa said Amaechi’s entry into the presidential race has boosted the party’s national visibility and momentum ahead of 2027.

He added that the ADC is positioning itself as an alternative platform built on internal democracy, transparency, and grassroots participation. The party noted that interest has extended beyond the governorship race, with several aspirants expressing intention to contest Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats.
