Dino Melaye Criticizes Peter Obi Over Party Switching, Questions Leadership Capacity
In a statement posted on social media, Melaye said Obi “excused himself from a tough situation,” arguing that if Obi cannot navigate internal party crises, he is unprepared to manage the complexities of national governance. “If he cannot handle party tribulations and crisis, how does he intend to handle Nigeria? Because Nigeria’s challenges are far greater than ADC’s problems,” Melaye wrote.
He used the metaphor of an “air-conditioned kitchen,” suggesting that Obi prefers a comfortable political environment and is not suited for the pressures of a “hot kitchen” where difficult decisions are made.
Melaye also questioned Obi’s political trajectory, noting that he has never contested a party primary. He cited Obi’s past candidacies in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where he received a direct governorship ticket; his selection as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019; and his presidential bid on the Labour Party platform in 2023, both without primary contests. Melaye claimed this pattern explains why Obi left the PDP and later the ADC in search of another direct ticket, this time with the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), which he described as “an agency of APC.”
The remarks add to ongoing political discourse around party loyalty, internal democracy, and candidate selection ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Peter Obi has not yet responded publicly to Melaye’s comments.
