Court Nullifies INEC Guidelines on Party Membership Register Submission, Extends Deadline to September 2026

ABUJA— The Federal High Court has nullified parts of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines on party membership registers, ruling that political parties have until September 2026 to submit their registers.

Justice M.G. Umar delivered the judgment on Thursday in a suit filed by the Youth Party. The party had challenged provisions of INEC’s electoral guidelines relating to membership documentation and submission deadlines.

The court held that the affected provisions were inconsistent with existing legal requirements. As a result, it granted political parties additional time to comply with the submission process.

Legal observers say the ruling could significantly affect preparations for the 2027 general elections, particularly around internal membership verification and administrative compliance. They also note it may shape future engagements between parties and INEC over electoral procedures and timelines.

INEC had not issued an official response to the judgment at the time of filing this report.
