Phnom Penh, Cambodia – May 30, 2026*

The Royal Government of Cambodia has announced the termination of an immigration waiver previously granted to African nationals residing in the country, directing affected individuals to leave Cambodia on or before May 31, 2026.

According to an official notice issued by Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior, the directive applies to African citizens, including nationals of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African countries who benefited from the waiver arrangement.

The notice stated that all foreign nationals whose immigration-related fines have been settled must depart Cambodia before the deadline. Authorities warned that any affected foreigner found in the country from June 1, 2026, will face strict legal consequences.

Under the new enforcement measures, individuals who remain in Cambodia after the expiration date could face:

1. A prison sentence of up to two years; and

2. A financial penalty of US$8,000 before being permitted to leave the country.

The Cambodian government further announced that police and immigration officials will begin nationwide operations from June 1 to apprehend foreigners overstaying their permitted period. Those arrested will be handed over to immigration authorities for legal action.

The notice emphasized that the government will not tolerate violations of Cambodia’s immigration laws and urged all affected persons to comply fully with the directive.

The document was issued by Lt. Gen. Som Sopheak, Director General of the General Department of Immigration, and approved by Gen. Sar Sokha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Interior.

Cambodian authorities advised affected individuals requiring information or assistance to contact the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh.

The announcement is expected to affect numerous African nationals currently residing in Cambodia and comes as the government moves to strengthen enforcement of immigration regulations nationwide.
