Atiku Supporters Worldwide, ADC Jubilate as NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to the South
Supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar across the world, alongside members and loyalists of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have expressed excitement following reports that the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has resolved to zone its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to the southern region of the country.
The decision is being viewed by political observers as a major development capable of reshaping political calculations ahead of the next presidential election, while potentially positioning Atiku Abubakar as the leading and possibly sole major northern presidential candidate expected to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in 2027.
Celebrations reportedly broke out among several pro-Atiku support groups and ADC loyalists in Nigeria, Europe, North America, and parts of Africa shortly after news of the zoning arrangement emerged.
Many supporters described the development as a strategic political breakthrough that could consolidate northern political support around Atiku while setting the stage for a highly competitive three-way presidential contest involving strong southern contenders.
Political analysts noted that with both Tinubu and Obi widely perceived as influential southern political figures likely to command significant support from their respective bases, the emergence of Atiku as the dominant northern candidate could fundamentally alter electoral permutations across the country.
According to some supporters, the zoning formula may reduce fragmentation in northern political interests and strengthen Atiku’s chances of mobilizing support across the North and other regions where he maintains longstanding political structures.
A spokesperson for one of the diaspora-based support movements said the development has renewed confidence among coalition members and opposition supporters seeking a strong challenge to the ruling establishment in 2027.
“This is a major political turning point. The decision to zone the ticket to the South may ultimately create a scenario where Atiku Abubakar becomes the principal northern candidate with national spread, political experience, and an established support base across Nigeria,” the group stated.
Within the ADC, party loyalists reportedly welcomed the development, describing it as an opportunity for broader opposition collaboration and strategic alignment ahead of the election season.
Some political commentators believe the emerging political configuration could result in one of the fiercest presidential contests in Nigeria’s recent democratic history, especially if regional voting patterns, coalition politics, and voter sentiment play significant roles in determining the eventual outcome.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to pour in on social media, with Nigerians sharply divided over the implications of the zoning decision. While supporters praised it as a move capable of promoting balance and political inclusiveness, critics argued that leadership competence and national development should take precedence over regional considerations.
Although no official presidential lineup has been formally confirmed by the parties involved, consultations and strategic meetings among coalition leaders and political stakeholders are said to be ongoing, with more alliances and realignments expected ahead of the 2027 general election.
