Atiku, Amaechi Meet in Abuja, Pledge Unity to Rescue Nigeria Ahead of 2027

ABUJA— Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi met in Abuja on Monday in a high-level discussion that signals growing unity within the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, who recently emerged as the ADC presidential candidate after a nationwide primary, paid a surprise visit to Amaechi at his Abuja residence. The two leaders said they held “deep and honest conversations” on the state of the nation, focusing on worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and the need for patriotic Nigerians to come together to rescue the country.

“The challenges facing Nigeria today demand more than partisan politics,” Atiku said after the meeting. “We discussed practical steps to unite Nigerians of goodwill and offer the country credible leadership that prioritizes the people.”

The meeting underscores the ADC’s consolidation as a broad opposition platform. Both Atiku and Amaechi were top contenders in the party’s presidential primary, where Atiku secured the ticket with a decisive nationwide margin. Their public show of unity is being read as a clear signal that the ADC is closing ranks to present a united front against the ruling APC.

In a lighter moment, Atiku joked about Arsenal’s recent victory, calling Amaechi a “well-loaded Gunner,” and revealed that he was promised Fisherman Soup for the “second leg” of the visit.

Political observers say the meeting strengthens the ADC’s position as the most organized opposition coalition heading into 2027. The party has already conducted peaceful, transparent primaries across 24 states and the FCT, and is moving to harmonize its structures nationwide.

“This is what leadership looks like,” a senior ADC official said. “When leaders put the country first, they sit down, talk, and build consensus. That’s the difference between the ADC and the old parties.”

With the ADC now rallying around a single candidate and a unified strategy, party leaders say they are confident of mobilizing Nigerians who are tired of economic mismanagement and insecurity to deliver victory in 2027.

The ADC is expected to unveil its full campaign structure and policy platform in the coming weeks.
