Aspirants Withdraw from Kano Race
Six aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have withdrawn from the race for the Kano Central senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections and endorsed former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau.
The decision followed a high-level political meeting convened by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in Abuja on Sunday, May 10, 2026. According to _Kano Times_, the meeting lasted several hours and ended with a consensus among party stakeholders to back Shekarau as a consensus aspirant for the seat.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the aspirants — Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver — said they stepped down in the interest of unity and political stability in Kano State.
They stated that endorsing Shekarau was aimed at strengthening internal cohesion within the party and positioning the APC for victory in the 2027 elections.
Governor Yusuf’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Salisu Kosawa, confirmed the development in a Facebook post.
“He led a meeting with candidates contesting the Kano Central senatorial seat under the APC platform and they resolved to support Malam Ibrahim Shekarau,” Kosawa stated.
Shekarau recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in April 2026. He announced the move at his residence in Kano alongside PDP chieftain Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, during a gathering attended by supporters and political associates.
Addressing the gathering at the time, Shekarau said the move followed extensive consultations and careful evaluation of political developments, adding that those present unanimously endorsed the decision.
Shekarau served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and later held office as Nigeria’s Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015. He represented Kano Central in the Senate from 2019 to 2023.
The development comes as political realignments begin to take shape in Kano State and across the North West ahead of the 2027 elections.
